Developing visuals for scientific papers or a grant application can be challenging due to the need to convey a significant amount of information. Figures can even be the first point of contact for some when reading a paper and shape readers’ impressions. For instance, graphical abstracts that follow design principles significantly enhance readers’ first impressions of a paper, making it perceived as “more interesting, more clearly written, and more scientifically rigorous.” 1
In this project, the researchers were interested in showing both the process of culturing protists but also to differentiate the classical methods from the innovative ones. Hence, I decided to make the process with a top-down structure while having the comparison, as a second degree of hierarchy, from left to right. It was also important to develop an icon that could increase the reader’s perception and memory of each technique.
The resulting images allow the viewer to understand the process of culturing protists, enhance the perception of each step and compare different methods.
